Strong Sales to Businesses Continued to Prop up Dell

Strong sales to businesses continued to prop up Dell’s earnings in the first quarter despite a weak economy and still-sluggish demand from dell d830 battery consumers.
Dell’s report on May 18, 2011, came on the heels of earnings from Hewlett-Packard, which earlier in the day lowered its forecast for the year on weak personal computer sales, trouble in its dell inspiron 1200 battery services division and the impact of the Japanese earthquake in March.
For Dell, sales of servers, computers and storage devices to businesses continued to help it offset weaknesses that have plagued its Dell inspiron b130 battery consumer business the last few years. The company reported net income nearly tripled to $945 million, or 49 cents a share, from $341 million, or 17 cents a share.

Background
Dell is a computer company founded in 1984 by Michael S. Dell, whose success made him one of the wealthiest men in Texas. From its inception, the "Dell model" became synonymous with efficiency, outsourcing and tight inventories. However, in recent years the company has been plagued by serious problems, including misreading the desires of its customers, poor customer service, suspect product quality and improper accounting.wholesale
In June 2010, documents unsealed in a three-year-old lawsuit against Dell showed that the company's employees were aware that millions of its desktop personal computers sold from 2003 to 2005 were likely to break down. A later filing asserted that Dell had concealed evidence by providing dell inspiron 1525 battery only a snippet of the communications among top executives about the faulty computer problems.

TouchPad to launch June 12?

Thanks to an enterprising tipster, we’ve managed to get our hands on HP’s “QuickSpecs” technical specifications sheet for the TouchPad webOS tablet. The four-page document is something that HP puts together for their business customers and resellers (see examples here and here). They cover basics like what features are located where, model numbers and accessories, hardware specifications, and a slew of other bits that prove to be the bread and butter of the corporate IT buyer. wholesale

What they all have in common (besides a love for operating temperatures and altitudes) is a date down at the bottom: the release date for the product described. While our QuickSpecs sheet for the TouchPad doesn’t reveal any new details (it’s still gloss black, has only the front-facing 1.3MP camera, hasn’t gotten any thinner) aside from an operating altitude of 5000ft and temperatures up between 32°F and 104°F, (don't worry about that, we're sure the TouchPad will work just fine well beyond those extremes) the date at the bottom is new:
Worldwide — Version 1.0 — June 12, 2011

So a worldwide release for the TouchPad on Sunday, June 12th? Of course, this could change - the document was titled "current" - but it does jibe with evidence that is coalescing around early June. Don’t worry too much about that “Version 1.0” part, as it seems that’s HP’s way of noting that this is the first iteration of the TouchPad, in line with their version scheme for other products (for example, the EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC is on version 15). HP uses the version numbers like software numbers, denoting when a product has seen a spec bump, which happens often in the lifespan of an HP notebook or desktop model. We don’t expect it to happen that often for the TouchPad – our pocket books won’t be able to keep up!
Either way, June 12 isn't that far off - less than two weeks, actually. Just announce the date already, HP!

Samsung demands Apple hand over iPad 3 and iPhone 5

The Apple [AAPL] Samsung relationship continues to unravel, and while reports last week claim COO, Tim Cook, took a trip to South Korea to negotiate displays for Apple products, it looks like the battle between Samsung's mobile arm and the iPhone company is scuppering friendly relations.

[ABOVE: A detail from the Apple filing illustrating alleged similarities between Apple and Samsung's mobile products.]
Show and...sue
Apple last week demanded and won a California court order that Samsung turn over a variety of its unreleased Galaxy mobile products to Apple's legal team. They want to check these products and their packaging to see if there are any offending similarities between these and Apple's own designs. Apple has demanded access to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 tablets, and smartphones like the Galaxy S II, Droid Charge and Infuse 4G.
"Instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple's innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple's valuable intellectual property rights. As alleged below in detail, Samsung has made its Galaxy phones and computer tablet work and look like Apple's products through widespread patent and trade dress infringement. Samsung has even misappropriated Apple's distinctive product packaging," Apple's filing claimed.
A secret shared
In an unusual counterattack, Samsung is demanding that Apple hand it pre-production prototypes of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, along with the product packaging. Only Samsung's external lawyers will win the chance to take a pre-release glance -- but they are demanding this access by 17 June 2011, and this does fly in the face of Apple's customary corporate secrecy.
[This story is from Computerworld's Apple Holic blog. Follow on Twitter or subscribe via RSS to make sure you don't miss a beat.]
Samsung says it wants these to help it, "prepare its defense against any preliminary injunction motion brought against Samsung by Apple for trademark or trade dress infringement."
The big problem here is that Apple is one of Samsung's biggest customers, and depends on the firm for a swathe of components, including flash memory, displays and for production of the A5 and A4 processors used in Apple's iDevice series.
"We are Samsung's largest customer, and Samsung is a very valued component supplier to us. I expect a strong relationship will continue," Apple COO Tim Cook said during the company's just-gone financial call.
Apple spent $5.68 billion with Samsung last year, accounting for 4 percent of its revenue.
Seeking Samsung replacements
Apple will play every card it has available. For example, Intel has said it would be very interested in producing custom chips for Apple. "We believe that Intel has also stepped up its efforts to get into the foundry business. In particular, Intel is vying for Apple's foundry business," Piper Jaffray analyst Gus Richard has said.
Earlier this year a report claimed that Apple is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to get that firm to manufacture A5 processors for its devices.
Apple has reportedly been talking with Samsung with a view to sourcing AMOLED displays. Now it seems the firm may not land the contract, as Apple may choose to work with LG, assuming that manufacturer can make these displays.
Compounding problems
However, all Apple's moves to protect itself against Samsung come as the industry continues to resurrect itself following the triple disasters of Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown. These events have created component supply problems which are certainly impacting across the industry in the current quarter.
Apple's Mac sales are also exploding. The firm recently entered the top five PC makers in the UK for the first time, booting Samsung off that list.
With billions in the bank, Apple executives must be considering financing one or more of their existing manufacturing partners in creating new production lines for product components. Take Foxconn's expansion into Brazil as an example of this. However, these things won't happen overnight, and the problem with Samsung cannot be good for Apple's future product plans.
The situation is certainly a test for Apple's COO, Tim Cook. Cook has a reputation for being a smart business manager with tight control over components and inventory. How this puzzle is resolved will perhaps be seen as indicative of his potential as a future Apple CEO, though to be fair, some of these events are completely beyond his control.
What can Apple do to out-maneuver its South Korean war? How can the company replace arguable its most important component manufacturer? Let us know in comments below, and please, I'd be honored if you chose to follow me on Twitter so I can let you know when these items are published here first on Computerworld.

China urges factory safety after iPad plant blast

(AP) BEIJING - Beijing urged Foxconn Technology Group and other Taiwanese companies on Wednesday to ensure safety in their mainland China factories after a fatal blast at a facility that makes Apple iPads.
Last Friday’s explosion at the facility owned by Foxconn, Apple’s main manufacturing contractor, killed three employees. Foxconn blamed combustible dust in a workshop that polishes products and suspended production at the factory in the western city of Chengdu, prompting questions about whether supplies of the popular iPad 2 might be disrupted.
"We hope Foxconn and other Taiwan-invested enterprises can learn from this, carry out their safety responsibilities, strengthen internal inspection and management, root out hidden dangers in a timely way and ensure safe production," said Fan Liqing, a spokesman for Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
Taiwanese companies have invested billions of dollars in the mainland despite their government’s lack of formal ties with Beijing, which claims the self-ruled island as part of its territory.

Foxconn, a unit of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., manufactures mobile phones, computers and other products under contract for Apple Inc. and other global brands such as Hewlett Packard Inc. The company employs an estimated 1 million to 1.1 million people in China at a series of huge factory campuses.
Other Taiwanese-owned factories in China producing clothing, toys and other goods employ millions more. They are moving into higher-value electronics, computer chips and other products.
Foxconn produces the iPad 2 in Chengdu and at its flagship China manufacturing campus in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.
The company has not said how iPad 2 production might be affected, but research firm IHS iSuppli said lost output might total 500,000 units at a time when Apple says it is struggling to keep up with strong demand.

Taiwan show to feature Apple tablet challengers

  • (AP) TAIPEI, Taiwan - Computer manufacturers of all sizes and descriptions have been pushing to get a piece of the ever-expanding tablet market created by the launch of Apple’s iPad in April 2010.
The obsession with tablet computing will be on full display Tuesday as Computex, the world’s second-largest computer show, begins its annual five-day run in Taipei. The prominence of tablets underscores a dramatic shift under way in the personal computer industry _ and keenly felt in Taiwan, which is home to some of the world’s biggest PC manufacturers _ as many consumers opt to buy a tablet rather than a new PC.
Computex will feature more than 50 tablet models, said organizer Taipei Computer Association, with big names including Lenovo Group Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. having their products displayed.
Researchers have predicted slower growth in PC sales this year because of the rising consumer interest in tablets. Gartner Research recently cut its sales growth forecast for global PC sales in 2011 from 15.9 percent to 10.5 percent. According to IHS iSuppli, world PC shipments declined 0.3 percent year-on-year to 8.1 million units in the first quarter of 2011, with sales by No. 3-ranked Acer plunging 20 percent.
Many analysts say it may take two or three years before mobile device software from Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. can catch up with iPads, which have thousands of applications for consumers to choose from. That may mean a hard time for many PC makers in the short term.
Research company CDC says Apple Inc. had a 73 percent share of the tablet market in the last quarter of 2010. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. was a distant second with 17 percent. It said 2010 tablet sales totaled 18 million units. CDC expects Apple to account for 70-80 percent of 2011 tablet sales that it predicts will reach 50 million units.
Besides tablets, Computex will also feature corporate and home servers and other cloud-based computing equipment and services, a sector Taiwanese firms have recently entered to make up for shortfalls in PC sales.
The world’s top contract laptop manufacturer, Taiwan-based Quanta Computer Co., is among those producing servers for global firms such as Google.
Cloud computing involves running applications in web browsers. The cloud allows users to store and retrieve data over the Internet whenever it is needed, instead of saving it on their own computers.
At least 10 of the tablet models to be shown at Computex are powered by Intel Corp.’s new Atom chip, the U.S. technology giant’s first microprocessor designed for tablets. Intel has moved into the fast growing market now dominated by chips using designs by UK-based ARM Holdings.
The new Atom "delivers improved video playback, fast Internet browsing and longer battery life," Navin Shenoy, general manager of Intel’s Asia-Pacific region, said in an emailed statement.
There is "a tremendous amount of experimentation going on in the industry," Shenoy said. Tablets, which are more popular in mature markets, will not replace PCs, he said, noting the strong PC demand in Asia and emerging markets.
Taiwanese high-tech firms are also entering the mobile device market pressured by Apple, whose market dominance _ extending to the second generation iPad2 _ has cut into their PC sales and dented the profits of some.
Taiwan’s top two PC vendors, Acer Inc. and AsusTek Computer Inc., are among those using Computex to display a range of touch-screen tablet computers. Their tablets run on the Android operating system that Google distributes free to allow quick Web browsing or film viewing, or on Microsoft mobile software that mostly targets the commercial market.
Acer and AsusTek have promoted their tablets _ Iconia Tab and Transformer among others _ as having expandable memory slots, hoping to lure consumers with more storage needs. The iPads don’t have built-in USB ports.
In addition, the companies say their sleek devices can become full-fledged laptops when plugging them into a keyboard docking station for easy typing.
In terms of tablet prices, Apple’s big orders give it a huge edge, while South Korean Samsung Electronics is able to bring costs down by making key components in house _ an advantage denied local makers, said Simon Yang, an analyst with Taipei-based Topology Research Institute.
So far, the Taiwanese company with the best success in selling mobile devices is HTC Corp.
The company manufactured the first handset based on the Android operating system in 2008. It has since marketed a wide range of smartphones to meet different tastes, and has recently introduced a movie viewing program called "HTC Watch." HTC’s sales jumped to 9.7 million handsets in the first quarter, up from 3.3 million a year earlier.
HTC’s first tablet, the 7-inch Flyer, sold well in pre-orders in Taiwan this month, vendors say. Its 16 gigabyte Wi-Fi version is priced at $499, the same as the 9.7-inch iPad. But HTC says its smaller-size device has an advantage, because it is lighter, and more manageable than the iPad.
By contrast, Acer and AsusTek have pursued a low-price strategy. Their Iconia Tab and Transformer models _ despite having larger 10.1-inch screens _ are priced at $450 to $500.
"Taiwanese companies are yet to become serious rivals to Apple," said Yang. "They either price their tablets too high or sell them at a loss in order to become competitive."

Apple is Trying to Seduce Samsung to Suply Super Amoled for iPad 3

Apple Incorporation is trying to seduce Samsung to supply iPad 3 tablet screen for the third generation. Recently, Officer ad interim chief executive of Apple, Tim Cook, reportedly visited the Samsung headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
In Cook’s view that his visit the Department of Research and Development Samsung to get the display Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED), which will be used in iPad 3. According to the daily The Korea Herald, on occasion, Cook which temporarily replaces the function of Steve Jobs as well as providing cash advances for the manufacture of the panel.
Although the supplier of AMOLED displays with high brightness and sharp colors, the Samsung did not use it in tablet screen technology itself, Samsung Galaxy Tab. However, Samsung AMOLED displays, homemade
in the smart phone Samsung Galaxy S.

  • To display order Apple, Samsung is making AMOLED display capable of delivering bright and sharp images, but does not drain battery power. The plan, Apple will release a tablet iPad 3 in early2012.
Before ordering the display to the Samsung, Apple has asked for the supply of LCD panels to LG, fellow South Korean electronics manufacturer. However, when creating a display for the iPad 2, some customers reported no defects in the screens made by LG earlier.
LG production is errors in the form of a yellowish hue in the corner of the screen that allegedly because of leakage of light. Yellow color on the screen before will be evident when viewing dark objects.
As a result, Apple had earlier transferred the manufacture of LCD panels to Samsung and decided to stop the orders made by LG to display the product defect had been completed. However, in the second quarter of this year, LG has completed the problem on its production lines and re-supplying the panels for Apple.

iPhone 5 Speculation Based on an Exclusive Two Year-old Prototype Tip

During the months preceding the launch of the iPhone 3GS, a tip was received from a trusted source about an iPhone prototype that Apple was hard at work developing and testing. At the time, it seemed like it was not worth publishing details since there was little to verify whether the report was specious.
Soon after the tip regarding a new iPhone prototype was shared with us, one of the features that the tip mentioned Apple was working on turned up in a patent filing. A feature that would allow users to share media in-call was described in detail, and the aforementioned patent reveals how that was actually being worked on, but we have yet to see it come to fruition.
A front dominated by a large screen, this particular prototype had a screen size of 3.8″, was assumedly one of the stand-out things on the prototype iPhone. With almost nonexistent black borders, the prototype had no visible home button or front speaker. The home button was removed from the front to become a new button on the side of the iPhone. Even crazier, Apple was apparently experimenting with placing a speaker underneath the glass on the front of the device.

  • Due to the addition of the FaceTime camera on the iPhone 4, it is unlikely that Apple would still desire placing a speaker underneath the front glass since the FaceTime camera needs a top black bezel to fit adequately. Apple would surely experiment with different sizes and form factors, so the display may be any size that would work nicely in a device with smaller borders around the screen and dimensions similar to that of the iPhone 4; likely between 3.8″ and 4.3″.
The reason we decided to report on this tip now is because it coincides with new rumors about the next-generation iPhone, particularly how others are claiming that the next iPhone will have a larger screen. While it has to be stressed that this is a two year-old tip, it seems plausible that Apple may have further developed the prototype detailed and used it as the basis for the fifth-generation iPhone, if other recent reports are to be believed. It is also plausible that nothing that the tip mentions will come to fruition, especially considering its age. This was finally published for discussion more so than for the minuscule possibility that the prototype is in fact anything like the next iPhone.
I think Apple would wait at least another year before releasing an iPhone that is drastically different from previous models since they released what was arguably the most radically new iPhone just last summer. App developers would have to make significant optimizations to their apps again to make use of the larger screen (and likely increased resolution, Apple would not give up the highly-praised Retina Display pixel density) after many are just finishing adding full Retina Display support, which would make recent app updates seem outdated. Of course I do not know for sure what the next iPhone will be like, but I would expect upgraded internal hardware at the least. The possibilities are endless, and Apple certainly demonstrates that behind closed doors with a presumably wide variety of mock-ups and prototypes.

Can iPhone 4 Survive a Thousand-Foot Drop? Yup

    iPhone 4 post-drop

In one of those stories that some will cast aside as “too good to be true,” a U.S. Air Force Combat Controller watches his iPhone 4 fall out of his pocket and descend downward toward the ground. At the time, the plane was a thousand feet above ground and flying at 150 miles per hour. Of course, anybody would assume that that iPhone was long gone and destroyed as soon as it left the man’s pocket.
Luckily, for both his sake and this story’s sake, one of the Sergeant’s buddies had the Find My iPhone app installed on his phone. The iPhone, which had been air-bound just a short while before, was found by the app and the men set out to retrieve it in a wooded area. Okay, so the iPhone’s network capabilities and GPS seem undamaged – wouldn’t shattered glass be expected upon discovery?

  • The iPhone 4 was promptly found in full working condition. Not just that, but it was undamaged. Actually, the man could not notice any impact at all; no scratches, not even dirt. The phone was in a Griffin Motif TPU case and had an aftermarket metal back. Both definitely softened the impact, but the glass and construction have to be given credit for this feat as well. More impressively, the front glass had only a thin screen protector installed and is just fine. (The images above are the Sgt.’s iPhone post-fall.)
Surely this story would have been different minus a case or if the iPhone had fallen on something rough like concrete. There have been many tales of a five-foot drop onto concrete leading to unhappy owners with shattered phones. We are glad to hear that the Sergeant got his iPhone back – and in one undamaged piece!

10 Reasons Not to Buy iPad 2

If you have already seen my in-depth list of reasons to buy the iPad, you may be wondering “are there any reasons not to buy an iPad 2?” Sure, there are:
    10. The competition is heating up. As more companies are scrambling to catch up with the iPad and stand out, there will be tons of new innovations and options over the next few months. Just sit back and watch.
    9. Same iOS. You can run the same version of iOS on your current iPad, so you do not miss a lot in terms of the operating system experience.
    8. Longer accessory/case lifetime. Since iPad 2 is a third thinner, many accessories and cases you already have will not work with it, which can be easily overlooked. You would probably be likely to spend extra to buy new toys for an iPad 2, making your wallet even lighter.
    7. No Retina Display yet. Rumors are already suggesting that Apple will bring the stunning Retina Display pixel density to the third-generation iPad. There is no doubt that this is a desirable feature, and one that most people will want. Plus, you never know what else could be in the next iPad…
    6. There is always next year. In a year, who knows if both iPads will feel outdated. If you are not compelled to buy an iPad 2, just wait to see the new features added next time around.
    5. Great deals. You can purchase the old iPad for over 20% off, and many cases and accessories are on sale as well for you to satiate for your desire for shiny things.
    4. Extra $. Even if you manage to sell your first iPad, you will still have to shell out a few hundred for a new iPad 2. If these reasons not to purchase the iPad 2 appeal to you, then hey, keep your cash.
    3. App compatibility. The majority of new apps will still be compatible with your current iPad for at least another year or two.
    2. Far from slow. Face it, despite how fast iPad 2 is, your first-generation iPad can not be called slow.
    1. It is not outdated. The reasons above lead to the conclusion to your first iPad is still far from outdated and incapable.

  • No matter how you slice it, both iPads are ahead of the competition. That could change over the next few months, but if you do not already have an iPad, you certainly could not go wrong with a discounted iPad or iPad 2.

    iPad 2 Apple Event Recap

Today Apple held an event in San Francisco at 10a.m. PST. Per the invitation to the event, we knew there would be talk of the iPad 2. Many rumors swirled around and most of what we heard came to fruition. Here is a recap of the event.
Steve Jobs came out first announcing a partnership with Random House and iBooks. This will allow users to read more books than ever using the iBooks app.
Steve announced that Apple just sold their 100 millionth iPhone.
Steve begins talking about the progression from iPod to iPhone to iPad and the success of each. He says, “We sold 15m iPads… that’s more than every tablet PC ever sold.”
They showed video of iPads being used in schools, hospitals and with special needs children.
Then he says, “Today we’re going to introduce iPad 2.”
“What is iPad 2. What have we learned? It is an all new design. It’s a completely new design. And it’s dramatically faster. We have a new chip we call A5.”
“We go all out on the graphics performance. Up to 9 times faster. Same low power as A4. This will be the first dual core tablet to ship in volume.”
“Second, we’ve built in some cameras for video. We’ve got a rear and front facing. More on that in a few minutes.”
“We’ve also built in the gyroscope we have in the iPhone and iPod touch.”
“Having built in all this stuff, one of the striking things about the iPad 2 is that’s dramatically thinner. 33% thinner.”
“The new iPad 2 is thinner than your iPhone 4.”

  • “It’s really thin… and it comes in two colors. And we’re shipping white from day one!”
“In addition to having both colors, we have models that work with both AT&T and Verizon.”
“Now here we are adding stuff into the iPad. Cameras, faster CPUs, gyroscope and all this stuff. We’ve made it way thinner. Something’s gotta give. You would think we’d have to give up battery life. But we found a way… the same battery life as the original iPad.”
“This has been tried and tested… iPads get 10 hours of battery life.”
“In addition to preserving the battery life, we’ve also preserved the price. The same exact prices.”
“When you add this together with over 65,000 apps… we think 2011 is going to be the year of iPad 2.”
“Just a beautiful product… so when are we going to ship it? April, May, June? No. March 11th.”
“26 countries or more on March 25th. And that is iPad 2.”
“Some other new features. HDMI out. We have a cable that does just that.”
“Something that’s going to be even more popular, we call Smart Covers.”
“We did a case for the original iPad. It worked pretty well, but we went to all the trouble to make this beautiful design, but then covered it up with the case. We thought we could do better than this with the iPad 2.”
“We designed the case right along side the product. It’s not a case — it’s a cover.”
“It automatically wakes the iPad when you open it, and puts it to sleep when it closes it. Now how is this held on? Do we have screws? No — we use magnets.”
“There are magnets in the hinge and the cover. And what would these cases be if they didn’t come in colors. 5 poly, 5 leather.”
“So those are the two accessories. Now let’s go back into the iPad 2, because we have a new release of iOS — iOS 4.3.”
“Along with the iPad 2, we’re releasing the next release of iOS 4.3. It starts with significantly increased Safari performance. We took the Nitro JavaScript engine. Next, iTunes home sharing. It lets you get at all of your content directly over WiFi. Next, AirPlay improvements.”
“When you tap on the AirPlay icon, it looks around and finds your Apple TV. It’s that easy. We’re making it even better in iOS 4.3. If you’re sharing photos, you can use all of the built in slide show options. And now in 4.3, apps from the Store and even websites can do video or audio.”
“Next, this is something we heard from customers. Some customers have said they want to use the switch on the device to quickly mute the device, others have asked for a switch to change the orientation lock.”
“Next, the iPad 2 comes with these new cameras. And we’ve built in some new software — starting with Photo Booth. Let me give you a demo.”
“Here I have an iPad 2 which is mirrored up there. Let me launch Photo Booth. The iPad 2 is so powerful that we’re looking at 9 live video streams at once.”
    “That’s Photo Booth.”
“Next is FaceTime. It’s the best and easiest way to video conference. We’re bringing it to the iPad. You can FaceTime between two iPads, between an iPad and an iPhone, or between an iPad and a Mac.”
“From day one, you can FaceTime from your iPad 2 to all the iPhone 4 customers out there.”
“So these are just a few features in iOS 4.3, and this will be out March 11th…”
“In addition to these two apps being built into iOS 4.3, we have two other new apps. And we like doing apps. It can set the bar. It sets the bar high for developers.”
“The first one is iMovie for iPad.”
“Today we’ve got a new version that takes advantage of the iPad 2 and its extra horsepower. I’d like to show it to you.”
“Precision editing, sending HD video around with one tap. A lot of great features in an app we’re going to price at just $4.99. Available on March 11th.”
    “Next up… GarageBand for iPad.”
“Touch instruments, you can plug in a guitar if you want, but it’s got touch instruments. Guitar amps and effects, 8 track recording and mixing, 250+ loops…”
“I’m blown away with this stuff. You know, playing your own instruments. Or using the Smart Instruments. Anyone can make music now.”
“So, GarageBand for iPad. This is no toy. You can use this for real work. I cannot tell you how many hours teenagers are going to spend making music with this.”
“So iPad 2 — amazing product. Faster, lighter, thinner. Cameras and gyro. iOS 4.3 and FaceTime. iMovie and GaragrBand. 3G on AT&T and Verizon. Same battery life. Same prices. Black and white. Smart Covers.”
“We think 2011 is clearly the year of iPad 2…”
“This will define the category for years to come.”
“This is worth repeating. It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology is not enough. It’s tech married with the liberal arts and the humanities. Nowhere is that more true than in the post-PC products. Our competitors are looking at this like it’s the next PC market. That is not the right approach to this. These are pos-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive.”
“The hardware and software need to intertwine more than they do on a PC. We think we’re on the right path with this.”
“I’d like the teams that worked on this to stand up — give them a round of applause. And as always, I’d like to thank everyone’s families. They support us and let us do what we need to do. They make it possible for us to work our tails off.”

This is a big day in the technology industry. Apple has done it again by pushing the boundaries further and further of we thought was possible!

    Keep Your Camera Powered

Cameras on the market today need batteries to operate and these batteries need to be charged. As a result special camera batteries & chargers have been developed to take care of this problem. Having a picture of a special occasion for one’s photograph album or to share is important in everyone’s life.
Many very sophisticated cameras have been developed in the past few years. These cameras can perform a number of different tasks that was not possible a short time ago. Many of them require special batteries, which need to be recharged often in order to contain enough power to operate the camera efficiently.
Chargers to maintain these batteries differ, designed to charge AA, AAA, triple A, Ni-MH and Ni-CD batteries. The majority will handle up to 4 rechargeable AAA or 2 rechargeable triple A with other models available. Some cameras take a lot of power and the batteries, for the most part, need recharging often.
Some of the many companies that are manufacturing cameras also have special batteries that are the only ones that will fit the camera. Some of these batteries are very expensive. When purchasing a camera one should check the type of battery, the price, how long the battery will work before needing a charge and other pertinent information.
Batteries, unfortunately, after a time no longer function. The better camera batteries often last many years because of infrequency of the camera’s use. However, all do not fall in this category and may need to be replaced more often. With some newer cameras, if one fails to turn it ‘off’, this will continue to drain battery power.
The type of power source required is also important. Some camera battery chargers can be plugged into a cigarette lighter on a car. This is important when one is on an all day outing and suddenly finds their camera batteries running low. Other chargers need to be plugged into an electrical outlet and may or may not be adaptable to power sources in other countries.

  • Forget Google’s android emulator: a startup company has created an Android runtime environment for Windows.
Ars Technica reports that startup company BlueStacks is currently working on a native x86 Android runtime that will enable Android apps to run within Windows without the need for an emulator. The technology has reportedly impressed potential investors to the point that they have now dumped $7.6 million in Series A funding into the project so that the team can turn its software into a full-blown business.
